Pineapple is grown across the tropics. Pineapples are large oval fruits with a characteristic scaly exterior. When cut open and peeled, they have a sweet-smelling and very high sugar-content flesh. Pineapple is available fresh, canned and candied. Pineapple flesh should be eaten fresh and uncooked, or can can sliced as a dessert on its own or in fruit salads. Pineapple is sometimes cooked by baking into cakes or into sweet and sour sauces.
