Traditional Matcha Method[1]

Mixing Matcha Tea With Bamboo Whisk

Matcha tea is the tea for the Japanese tea ceremony.

To prepare matcha tea:

  1. Preheat the matcha bowl with hot water and place the whisk with prongs facing down into the water to wet them.
  2. Set the wet whisk aside and measure out 70 ml (about 2⅓oz) of hot water into a measuring cup and leave to cool.
  3. Measure about 1 tsp of matcha tea powder and place it into the bowl.
  4. Once the water temperature drops to 70 - 80oC (158 - 176oF), pour into the matcha bowl.
  5. Using the whisk, whisk in a figure of eight or zig-zag motion until the matcha has a thick froth with many tiny bubbles on the surface.
  6. Drink in small sips.

Quick Matcha Method[2]

  1. Take ½ teaspoon of matcha.
  2. Add it to hot water.
  3. Give it a whisk (a hand held electric milk frother works best) and knock it back in one!

Alternatively, you can use matcha as a caffeine-filled flavouring for fruit juice, milk, smoothie[3] or yoghurt:

  1. Take ½ teaspoon of matcha.
  2. Add it to your drink base.
  3. Give it a whisk and drink.
