Gløgg is the traditional spiced red wine drink enjoyed in Scandinavia. You can either use the spices to flavour the mulled red wine as you make it or use a gløgg extract. The spices can be bought pre-mixed and the gløgg extract ready-made, but the commercial gløgg mixers can be very sweet.
Recipe For Gløgg Mixer
Makes two 250 ml bottles; each bottle is enough for a bottle of red wine or 8 glasses of gløgg.
- 200 ml blackcurrant juice
- 75 ml lemon juice
- 20 cloves
- 10 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 2 of 5 cm cinnamon quills
- 200 g caster sugar
Place all the ingredients in a saucepan with 300 ml of water. Cover and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally. Simmer for 30- minutes, then strain. Sieve out the spices and pour the liquid into sterilised bottles. Seal at once. Stored in a cool, dark place, this will keep for months.
