Bere Meal (pronounced Bare Meal) is traditional to the Orkney and Shetland Islands. Bere meal is from a particular type of barley from those islands. The bere barley grains are kiln-dried, then stone-ground.

Bere meal is used to make bere bannocks - a 15 cm (6") round, 1-2 cm (1") thick, flat girdle-baked, soft scone. It's akin to the potato scone or chapatti.
