Basmati Rice is a classic Indian rice. Basmati rice is long-grained, tasting sweet and fragrant. Basmati rice is the rice for spicy curries, but also ideal for stuffings and rice salads. While brown basmati rice is sold, the bran does give it a nutty flavour rather than the desired sweet fragrance, so use the white basmati. A bay leaf or two adds a complementary bitterness to basmati and is worth trying.
To cook basmati rice:
- Use the absorption method, with 1:1 for white basmati rice, 2:1 for brown basmati rice
